Smart Ways to Clean Your Tech Devices

Smartphones and tablets can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. This week I’ll be showing you how to clean your most prized possession while keeping it safe from water damage or harmful cleaning products. Before jumping into cleaning techniques, let’s talk about how often you should be cleaning your smartphone. Clean Geeks like myself might do this every couple of days, but for most of us, once a week is a good schedule to keep. Your phone and your health will thank you for it.

Let’s get started!

Most of us use a case of some kind to protect our phones. Don’t neglect the case. It can be just as filthy, if not more so, than the phone itself. Depending on the material of your case, cleaning should be easy and straightforward. In most cases, dampening a cloth with a drop of soap and wiping down the case should do the trick. If you want to go the extra mile in germ prevention, I recommend using a cotton swab and a dab of isopropyl alcohol for detailing.

Now that your case is clean, it’s time to clean your smartphone. First things first: Power down your smartphone. Now you’ll need more soap, isopropyl alcohol and a new, dry toothbrush. brushiebrushThe bristles on the toothbrush will clean all of the nooks and crannies of your phone with ease. It also requires less pressure, which means less of a chance to damage anything. Take a damp cloth and put some soap solution on it. Now wipe down your device. Wipe off any residue with a dry corner of the cloth. Use your dry toothbrush to detail the phone by brushing its bristles in the nooks and crannies of your phone. Once that’s finished, lightly dampen the bristles with isopropyl alcohol and gently scrub to sterilize the front and back of your phone. That’s it! Now you just need to let the phone air-dry or wipe it down with a dry cloth and your germ-free smartphone is ready to go!

There are also a variety of products that can make phone cleaning easier. If scrubbing your phone with a toothbrush once a week isn’t for you, here are some other solutions.

  1. Pre-made electronic wipes: Price range $5-$15. These wipes are ready to be used on phones, TVs, tablets, gaming consoles and more. They also have a non-glare solution built-in. Here’s a link to get you started, but there are a ton of similar products on the market from almost any retailer.
  2. iKlear: Price: $20. This iKlear kit works on all tech (not just Apple products) and comes with a microfiber cloth for wiping off the solution. It’s safe for touch screens and ready to use immediately.
